In many respects, the film director is probably the most important person involved in the making of your film, having overall responsibility for ensuring you’re totally satisfied with the outcome. That responsibility extends to each stage of the film’s creation:

• 1. Pre-production. The director collaborates on the writing of the script, selecting actors and conducting rehearsals. Shooting schedules are developed and the overall look of the film is set out, either in great detail at the start or allowed to develop as the film progresses, whichever is more appropriate.
• 2. Production. All lighting, audio equipment and cameras are set up and positioned to give the desired effect. Framing and tracking of shots are reviewed and sets are properly designed and configured. Most importantly, actors are given instructions and guidance so that the tone of their performance matches what is needed. Completed takes will be viewed for suitability and re-done if not satisfactory.
• 3. Post-production. The use of video filming has increased the director’s involvement in this stage of the process. The ability to digitally manipulate images has resulted in a video director role to edit the resulting film and provide input over its sound and visual effects.
